Martin L. Williston diary, 1862-1863.

Civil War diary kept by Martin L. Williston of Northampton, Mass. from 1862-63. Williston enlisted at age 19, and served from October 1862-August 1863, as 1st sergeant in Company K of the Massachusetts 52nd Volunteer Infantry. Diary contains personal entries written in shorthand, with transcriptions in the margins and opposing pages, describing camp life in Louisiana and the siege at Port Hudson, including two sketches. Diary also contains lists of deaths and discharges; lists of guard and fatigue duty; and company rolls with annotations added later detailing where each soldier was from in Franklin and Hampshire counties, their age at enrollment, and death dates.
